Dear Friends:

This is my final posting on Chiefspeak. What began as an experiment a year ago in the spring, turned out to be an interesting platform from which to connect with friends and strangers in the specific role of Chief Secretary, USA East. It has become a way to communicate the truths of the gospel, the workings of The Salvation Army, and the innuendos of my own heart.

I thank God for everyone of you who have taken a moment or two in your life to view the site. For the record, as I close today, it has amounted to 51,899 hits.

Forgive me for my recent flirtation with continuance under a different name. I liked each of the suggestions, but realized that the whole thing may have become too much of me. That would be a grave mistake, in that it isn't about me. It's about Christ and Him crucified, risen, and on the right hand of the Father, in love with Him and us.

It may be that I will re-enter the scene with something when Carolyn and I come to our new home and work in Australia...something fresh. We leave here on 26 July and will officially begin there on 1 August.

There's much to consider in this medium which I will not ignore, nor will I be a stranger to many of your blogs which are influencing my life affirmatively.

Independence Day

More than just the name of a movie, Independence Day is extraordinarily important to consider and celebrate. The value of our freedom cannot be overestimated nor underestimated.

In the USA, it informs much of our consciousness and personal formation. We find it difficult to relate to any culture of limitation. This really explains a lot. The outcomes of such thinking are not always affirmative.

Our highest and best freedom is found only in Christ. For Him we can celebrate Independence Eternity. This is a bit longer than a day.

Summer Camp

Some of the best SA ministry takes place at summer camp. Each year our camp staffs shepherd thousands of children of which most enter a relationship with Christ. Hallelujah!

The kids learn all sorts of things and benefit greatly from the constructive environment. Campfires, swimming, hiking, boating and all. Then there are specialty camps like music camp being out the best in our kids.

The staff too experience life changing possibilities. I pray they make the best of their summer and look for the mark of God on their lives.

Dear Corps Family:

Please be in prayer for the family of Karesse Ebron. As you may be aware, Karesse's body was found last night in an area along Route 45 in Ramapo. An acquaintance and neighbor of the Ebron family has been charged with her murder.

Karesse was an employee at our GAINS After School Program and summer Day Camp. She was just 16 years old.

Although anything we may say or do cannot comfort her family we know One who can comfort them. Please bring Karesse's family and the family of the young man arrested to the Lord in prayer today. Karesse is survived by her mother, father, and two younger brothers.

Sunset

So today is our last official day in our current appointments. Carolyn and I praise God for every minute of every opportunity in these last three years. It also points to what will likely be our last appointment in the Eastern Territory, USA. We have been able to serve 30 years in our home territory. Hallelujah!

Our hearts have begun to turn "down under" now that we anticipate our move to the Australia Southern Territory. We are hearing extraordinary reports about what we can expect and the warmth of the Australian people. That has been our personal experience as well.

Tonight we salute the Salvationists of the USA Eastern Territory in gratitude to God for you. We commend to you our successors and good friends, Lt. Colonels Larry and Gillian Bosh. They will continue to serve the Lord well. You can trust them and follow their leadership to glorify God. Hallelujah!

We finally caught a matinee today. Having read the book (my annual novel a year or so ago), I wanted to see the movie. It's a novel...a story...not true...certainly not consistent with Scripture, but I did enjoy the mystery again. There are some concepts that would cause you to think a little...although, not a lot.

The truth about Jesus is found in the Scriptures, which "were given by the inspiration of God and ... they only, constitute the divine rule of Christian faith and practice." Let us look to His written Word to know the Way, the Truth and the Life. It's more exciting than a Dan Brown novel and it has a happy ending for those who believe.

Montclair, NJ

We enjoyed an inspirational day at the corps in Montclair, NJ. Praise the Lord for this model corps. Majors Carole and Alastair Bate simply make you feel at home along with the local officers, soldiers and friends. Most of the music today was a tribute to the incredible music contribution by Australian composers and arrangers. Carolyn was reminded that the music in Australia will make us feel quite at home.

Sunday School featured C.A.S.T. – Creative Arts Service Team – A product of the Territorial Arts Ministries with Carol Jaudes. They gave a powerful message in this first class presentation. If you have an opportunity to see them this summer, they’re a must!

We were at home at this corps. I think you would be too. Sometime, make a visit or give a call to the soldiers of the corps. They’ll tell you about the strong family focus and the deep love that runs through the people. Hallelujah!

Majors George and Linda Childs

Majors George and Linda Childs celebrated their retirement service today in the presence of family and friends at Ladore Lodge. The meeting was civilized and brought honor to God. Majors Shirley and Gary Long helped with many of the details while Lt. Colonels Tim and Linda Raines presided with appropriate respect and class.

George and Linda have served their entire officership in the ever challenging, Adult Rehabilitation Center Command. They've worked hard and invested themselves in the lives of beneficiaries and ARC staff to God's delight. Their associate officers and family gave poignant tributes to them in the meeting. We were reminded of God's grace during difficult and regular days.

Thank you, Linda and George for your faithfulness. We commit you to God's continued care in these fresh days of retirement.

Office Staff

The office staff available to many people can define their experience and effectiveness. A good office staff can make the most difficult of jobs manageable. An average administrator can be upgraded to a good administrator with the right office team. I have seen it go both ways depending upon the office.

Carolyn and I salute Eileen, Sandy and Mara who have made up our office teams in the appointments we are finishing this week. We were able to do it because God gifted us with these dedicated, hard working people. They are professional, efficient and friendly. We thank God for them.

Teeth

Have you thought lately about the importance of your teeth? I understand that in addition to giving you a good smile, the care of your teeth can significantly impact your health. A lot of germs enter the body through our mouths. Good dental care can cut back on the bacteria that will build up in the mouth if left unattended.

Most communities have fluoride in the drinking water. Where they don't, there is an appreciable increase in dental decay among the residents. I've heard lately that families who, increasingly drink bottled water, might want to compensate in some way for the loss of fluoride found in tap water.

Flash Floods Plague Houston, TX

The Texas governor sent National Guard troops to Houston Monday as torrential rainfall flooded homes and highways in southeastern Texas. Harris County Emergency Management reported that as much as 10.5 inches of rain was reported in the Houston area by the height of the morning rush hour. Almost six inches of rain fell in just 75 minutes near Hobby Airport, the National Weather Service reported.

The Salvation Army dispatched a "canteen", a mobile feeding unit, from Conroe, TX, to support personnel staffing the local emergency operations center. Emergency officials, including local Salvation Army personnel, will continue to monitor the flooding as more rain is forecast for tonight and tomorrow.

Fathers' Day

This is a welcomed day by many fathers. It certainly was for me. My kids (The term children doesn't seem to work for adults and offspring sounds like a clinical category.) always treat me with deep love, respect and presents...nice presents. Ties and socks are good, but I'm usually looking for something that has electrical current. My kids, all of them make me very proud. Each are on a journey of discovery that includes God. This, of course is the only reasonable path in life. All others lead to destruction.

Some of my friends, like me, have lost their fathers on the journey and others have not known their fathers or have known them to bring trouble to their lives. So Fathers' Day becomes complicated. Do I need to remind you that our Father has never let us down and will never be absent? No one loves you more. You can count on Him on Fathers' Day and every day.

Rehearsal

It's an interesting word. It generally means to practice or to go over a subject to ready for a public demonstration. It's a very good idea to rehearse before you go on stage. It's a very good idea to rehearse before a wedding like we did tonight.

I am wondering if there is ever a time to rehearse one's faith. I'm sure we can agree that rehearsing an opportunity to present Christ to another individual is a good plan. Many of us have done so at evangelism training classes. What I'm asking though is if there is ever a time that we are not giving a first hand testimony and are only rehearsing.

I conclude that we no more rehearse our daily faith than we rehearse breathing. We are always on. Lord, help us.

Pastoral Care

This is such an essential part of our ministry. Field and staff Officers should delight in the opportunity. It is a privilege which we in the ministry should cherish.

For the officers ranks, we have a Pastoral Care department at THQ and even one of the divisions have pastoral care officers specifically engaged in this ministry.

I want to salute these anointed people. They move quietly among us and most of their work is never publicly recognized. This, of course, isn't why they do it. I am wondering about the accumulated affect it has on these people. We usually expect them to sort out our problems, but it must be challenging for them to sift it all out at the end of the day. They are champions and they are confidential. They deserve our respect, gratitude and prayer.

What a great moment. Here we were at the SFOT in the middle of the Commencement exercises, and the TC promotes Steve and Sharon to the rank of Lieutenant. Now here it's looo-tenant and other places it's leff-tenant. Steve's Canadian so he might be thinking leff and Sharon is African. Do they say leff down there? I wonder how it is said in Australia?

Well, it's a confirmation that the wonderful Project 1:17 is now in the hands of the Busseys. This is a good decision. They've been on board since the beginning and have a great understanding of what is being accomplished in this important program. They will miss Majors Ashcraft, but they will do well. They know how to trust the Lord.

THQ

Our friends at THQ gave us a send off luncheon yesterday. It was a delightful hoot.

They dug up and doctored up photos and film footage to give everyone memorable images. I knew one day some of these photos would haunt us. We laughed and we recalled the great days spent working among such a dedicated group of people. For the most part, the employees here don't just see it as a job, they see it as being stakeholders in the mission of TSA.

WE have served over 12 years at THQ in our officership so far and give witness to the excellence, faithfulness and commitment we observe in all who make up THQ. Thank you, friends.

Commissioning 2006

The weekend was filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit. Following the TEC meetings, we came towards the SFOT for the graduation of Project 1:17. Thank you, Majors Ashcraft for your faithfulness. 1:17 will miss you, but always remember you.

Friday morning started with the dedication of the Agnew Hall at the SFOT. It is a family residence facility, beautifully done. Then came the Commencement Meeting for the cadets and 1:17. Students were honored, degrees were conferred and God was glorified.

Friday night we were off to THQ to launch the 24/7 Prayer Initiative. Our people are committed to pray around the clock for no less than one year. Nothing in our territory will ever be detached from this prayer movement. Pay attention. God is.

The first ever Territorial Hispanic Celebration happened on Saturday, concurrent with Star Search. Both events hit the mark with excellence and inspiration. The thrill of our Spanish speaking brothers and sisters worshiping the Lord in this united setting in their first language was powerful and extraordinary. Star Search is a long term proven event that continues to raise the level of Salvationism in the context of music and the arts.

On Sunday, we witnessed the presence of God in the ordination and commissioning of the Visionaries session of cadets. In the afternoon we celebrated their appointment service. There's something powerful about people walking on to a stage before 2,000+ people, saying, "I'll go where you want me to go, dear Lord." Hallelujah!

Commissioners Siegfried and Inger-Lise Clausen

We have begun to enjoy the ministry of Commissioners Clausen, first in the TEC, next in the Commencement at the SFOT, then in the Territorial Hispanic Celebration and finally in the Commissioning exercises themselves.

From what we've seen and heard today, we're in for a grand time in the Word and in the Lord. Their ability in English and Spanish make them perfectly suited to the tasks in front of them.

Challenged Health

Tonight I'm thinking of our friends in the mission who have health challenges. I don't do so in a defensive way after what I blogged yesterday, nor do I believe those who commented need a rebuttal.

If we can settle that the objective of best health honors God, then it stands to reason that those who struggle with poor health are serving God with their hopes and attempts for improved health. Truly, some people cannot better their health, no matter what they do. These folks are not poor stewards of their bodies, but rather victims of this natural world infected with disease and duress. For these, we pray a prayer of healing and entrust them to God.

Good Health

Without question our good health is a part of our personal stewardship before God. I am not sure if the mind, body, or spirit is superior to one of the others. I do understand that each have their significance.

In our spiritual formation we tend not to consider the importance of our physical well being. I think this is a serious oversight that we should adjust. We pray better when we are rested. We are more fit to give good service when we are in good physical condition.

I am preaching to myself here. I need work in this area. Let us encourage each other with appropriate suggestions and support of good health. I think God would approve.

Covenant Sunday

This is a high holy day in the calendar of TSA. The day that the second year cadets (Visionaries) are challenged to publicly sign a covenant with God for their service in TSA. It is a blessed moment.

Commissioner Moretz gave it to them in a pastoral, but firm manner. It's hard to argue with a man of God who has 43 years of covenant in his experience. No one did argue. All were receptive to the Holy Spirit, who made the meeting and the commitment time sacred.

I praise God for these cadets who have studied hard, worked hard and now who make a hard promise. It is a God honoring moment. Hallelujah!

Octogenarian

This means a person is 80 years old. This would describe Brigadier Evelyn Grimm, who is secure enough for the world to know her age. It was said at her birthday party, that her life has been an undeniable testimony to the veracity of the gospel which declares the love of God through Christ.

She is an amazing woman and a true soldier of Jesus. She continues to contribute at her corps and will only be found there on Sundays. She even demonstrates a post-modern acceptance in her lifestyle and understanding. She's a great lady.

I don't usually call her Brigadier. I most often call her Mom.

Relationships

An important part of our world is our relationships. We have a host of both positive and negative relationships through life. Some are deep and lifelong, others are as fleeting as the person who cut you off in traffic today.

I see them all as gifts from God. By the way, I am writing of relationships with people, not inanimate objects...that we say we love or couldn't live without. God has made us in His image. If we truly want to know Him, we need only to look at the people around us to get a glimpse of Him.

So in all the changes of life around you, take a look at the new relationships that God is gifting you with. Don't be guilty of dismissing any relationship, especially if it is constructive. You may be refusing a gift of God.

Changes

Following the announcement of moves throughout the territory, lives are changing. This in itself is not bad, but it is complex. You may recall I grew up in an SA officer home. The moves were not traumatic to me, but they had their challenges.

In these days of June, can we keep these loved ones in our hearts to petition the Lord to extend His grace to the children and parents so affected? Saying goodbye to friends, favorite locations and environments and looking for new is not easy for most people. I can only suggest that each person in the family might approach the whole thing differently, so we need to give each person in the family their own space and personal consideration for change.

Our lives are mostly about relationships. A change in living provides for an amazing increase in the sphere of relationships in which we can engage. My life has only ever improved with each change. God has given me vastly more relationships that have made life exciting and challenging. Go for it!

Memorial Day 2006

As we visit Kensico each year, we celebrate the memory of Salvationists who have been called home and whose remains are buried in this beautiful SA section of the Kensico Cemetary. Many of the great hearts are remembered there including Evangeline Booth, Herbert Booth, Consul Booth-Tucker, Samuel Logan Brengle, Joe the Turk and more. When you walk these grounds, you walk through the pages of the history of TSA in America.

Our Territorial Leaders, Commissioners Lawrence and Nancy Moretz have always made it a priority to be there and participate in the service of remembrance. They enlist the SFOT Band and Chorus and the territorial cabinet leadership to make it a very special occasion and experience. The weather was perfect this year and God was honored by acknowledging Him and His provision of grace. Hallelujah!

Earthquake in Indonesia

TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - The Salvation Army has launched an immediate response after an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the island of Java, flattening buildings in a densely populated area south of the city of Yogyakarta. The latest media reports indicate more than 2,800 people have been killed and thousands more injured.

The leader of The Salvation Army in Indonesia, Commissioner Johannes Watilete, as instructed key personnel to the site. The Salvation Army has a number of experienced emergency response teams in Indonesia, known as "Compassion in Action" units. The Army's medical team based in Semarang is establishing a medical/health tent in Bantul village.

The Salvation Army operates a Boys Home close to the impacted area. The Director, Major Amelia Tatilang, reports that a lot of houses and buildings have collapsed or suffered extensive damage. Speaking soon after the quake, Major Tatilang said, "The surrounding wall at the Boy's Home collapsed in the quake. The boy's bed rooms were damaged and also their function room."

Open Lines

In most areas of life, the issue of communication is essential. When a marriage is doing well, it's advantaged by good communication. When an administrative team is functioning with effectiveness, communication is working. In your computer right now, there are software and hardware components that have to communicate for you to be on the internet.

Can you imagine having a relationship without communication? It's not possible...at least a positive relationship. This understanding, (if I'm communicating it correctly) begs the question, how we think we can have a relationship with God when we don't communicate with Him?

Joy

I hope you're experiencing the joy of Jesus today. He will delight in you and His joy will abound in you, if you want.

There are plenty of reasons today to be downcast or even passive. I call you to joy. Please don't allow your environment or circumstances to define you, especially if they're negative. Know the grace of God in His freshness and determine to experience and share the joy. Just think of your salvation and your Savior. Joy will begin to overwhelm you with hope and height and love.

This is God's design for each of us. He sees this potential in us and shares His joy without prejudice. Joy is as much a discipline as it is an experience.

Caring

How is it that we show our love for each other? Sure, there are plenty of ways, but the point is that you demonstrate your love. You don't simply talk about it or keep it to yourself.

We have good friends that love us. We know that because they show us. They help when we need help. They laugh with us and cry with us. They share their dreams and their families with us. By this they show that they love us and trust us.

Can there be anything more valuable? I think we are very wealthy when it comes to the good friends that are ours. I hope they see us in the same way. I'll work on showing them.

Youth Councils

We have been hearing amazing accounts of Youth Councils this year. At the office yesterday and today there was continuous praise to God for the Youth Councils in Greater New York, Northern New England and Southern New England from this past weekend. Glory to God!

Phil Laeger was at GNY. Larry (the Major) Ashcraft was at NNE and Evan Hickman was at SNE. They weren't alone. Each had its own significant cast and each was invaded by the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!

I am so proud of our Salvationists. They witness to the presence of God no matter if they're still in their teens or early twenties. Don't let the experience evaporate. Place a marker somewhere in your life...and remember. Remember the visit of God so you'll recognize Him in even quieter and less public opportunities. Get to know Him. You won't regret it!

Finger prints

Each of us have unique finger prints. That fact alone is mind-boggling. Law enforcement is so convinced of this truth that the presence of your finger prints means you were there...undeniably.

God has designed us individually for purpose. His plan is as individual as our finger prints. You and you alone have a specific role to play or live for God. The great sin then is to wait too long before you make that holy connection to do what He designed you to do. I don't want to miss one minute of His calling upon my life. There is urgency in this understanding. There is urgency in our living.

Liberty Pole Way Corps

This is a great name for a corps. It's in Rochester, NY and they're using what was the old Rochester Citadel Corps building. It's alive. It's hot. It's being infused by the Holy Spirit. As Major Charles Deitrick leads the city, (Pastor) Reggie Cox is the corps officer. He's a dynamic evangelist who has by the grace of God attracted 200+ in their holiness meeting on Sunday mornings.

Today the people were rockin' and 10 new Junior Soldiers were enrolled. The kids were beautifully dressed in JS uniforms and the certificates were appropriately framed. Local officers were aplenty and each looked good in their uniforms as well.

TSA has always done well where the local culture is featured in the worship. This true all over the world. It's working here. God bless you Liberty Pole Way Corps!

When the good ones retire, how will we manage? Lt. Colonel Sharon Berry orchestrated a perfect retirement service today at the School For Officer Training. It finished in 55 minutes. Her retirement begins on June 1, 2006.

She has been an incredible servant of God in these 42 years with most of her ministry at the SFOT. She served two terms in Africa and another in Russia. God has been her constant companion and The Salvation Army is better for her.

Her words today were of gratitude to God and the many people who have supported her throughout the years. Her life has spoken so convincingly that what she said today was "icing on the cake." I celebrate her ministry and witness to the role model she has been to me.

Captains Brett and Jessica DeMichael have done it again. Their annual community meeting was tonight and it was a great success. Corps groups participated. The place looked good. The mayor gave a proclamation. The others award was given out. Nice job.

I was particularly impressed with their insistence on communicating the gospel in the midst of this strong community program. They, of course, will give credit to their team, including staff and advisory board. Their building an Army as they build the Army up in the perspective of these community leaders present. Job well done!

No Appointment Day

Today was amazing: no appointments. This is definitely a rare occurrence. I can't remember the last day that happened at the office. I didn't have any trouble filling the day and even missed lunch by remaining focused on the job.

Some days, the whole day is filled to the brim with appointments. These are the days work goes home at night in order to stay on top of things. Most days are a mixture of the two with a few unexpected appointments scattered throughout. I have learned to accept these unexpected appointments as divine interruptions. They often bring unplanned joys and bumps that turn into satisfaction.

Move Week

I heard an expression that this was move week in our territory. I guess I've heard it before, but it struck me differently today. Perhaps this might better be called rumor week, when some of our more creative minds imagine just how the annual rotation might take place.

I've now sat on most sides of the table on the officer changes in the territory. Let me give you my perspective:

1. It's a holy process - prayer abounds in every aspect of the plan
2. There is a plan - It is dynamic and can change in a minute, but there is a direction for appointments and officers.
3. There is a conscientious attempt to serve both the officers (family included) and the appointments
4. There is a strategy to make appointments longer.
5. No appointments are punitive.
6. If an appointment is wrong, every effort is made to find a resolution.
7. Most appointment changes are driven by the desire of the officers themselves.
8. We trust God.

Why not insert yourself in the process and pray for the people affected by the coming changes?

While I'm not given to personal exposure in small groups, I find myself a willing participant in these and a beneficiary. Thank you, Major Munn. You're a gift to the territory.

Lotus Notes

If you're a SA computer user, it's likely that you use Lotus Notes. Some of our people are happy about what the software does for them and others are not so happy. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. In our territory it is the official form of written communication and it works just fine.

Isn't it amazing how much quicker we tend to respond to messages and how much quicker we expect others to respond to us? In the old days, (that makes me laugh just to type it) we used to allow a couple of days to pass between letters. There was something healthy about taking some time to form your thoughts and be certain of the correct response. For some letters, we were told to go ahead and write them, put them in a drawer for a day or two and then read it again to see if you should have sent it. Most of those letters were never sent, because time had healed emotions and wisdom raised its head.

So take time to read your e-mail today and don't always think you need to jump on the answer. A few moments in between can be therapeutic.

Dedication

It is a most precious moment, when parents bring their child to the altar to dedicate them to the Lord. We had this joy today in duplicate. Jacob Matthew Knaggs (my grandson) and Emma Kay Stoker (my great niece) were dedicated in a beautiful meeting at the SFOT.

The kids were appropriate and the parents were a blessing. Their composure in presenting the joys of their lives - their children to the Lord was exciting and refreshing. Simultaneously the child and parents are dedicated and marked as belonging to God. This is very good.

National Commander's Installation

Partners For Life

We are good at understanding the moral decisions of our daily walk and appreciate a holy life as God has prescribed. What about the collective SA? Do we manage and direct the affairs of TSA with the same expectations?

In some of our employment we seem to only be able to pay minimum wage. Why wouldn't we do better than the minimum allowed and begin to think in terms of a living wage?

In some of our employment we seem only to be able to hire a person part time, when full time would mean medical benefits. Why wouldn't we consider medical benefits for part time employees or hire them for enough hours to qualify for these benefits if they want.

In some of our employment we are not required to provide workman's compensation because some states allow not-for-profits to be exempt. Why wouldn't we have a plan to do it because it's right?

In these things we know that God's ways are different than our ways. I know the answers to my questions better than most people would. Perhaps the real question is why don't we do better...and better...and better to the glory of God.

Give and Take

Relationships require giving and receiving. If you're always giving or always receiving, there's a problem with your relationship.

I find it more natural to give than receive. I don't see it as a particularly holy aspect of my character, but I shy from a compliment or being waited upon. I know, Carolyn, you take care of me in more ways than imaginable. I've learned to appreciate and value our giving and receiving.

Tonight, some good friends gave me a surprise word of thanks and a few presents as well. This has really blessed my soul more than they could know. Please, I'm not lobbying for accolades or presents, but this particular moment with these particular people for whom I have the utmost respect has humbled me considerably.

CSM Ron Waiksnoris

Yes. I got it right. Not only TMS Ron Waiksnoris (Territorial Music Secretary) or B/M Ron Waiksnoris (NYSB Bandmaster), but Corps Sergeant Major Ron Waiksnoris of the Montclair, NJ Citadel Corps.

We were there to witness the public installment of the new CSM by corps officer Major Alastair Bate. The CSM is a dedicated man of God with a love for his corps and their people. Previously, he had been Y.P. Bandleader and Sunday School Teacher. He may still teach Sunday School. He's the kind of man that doesn't sit around waiting for others to do the work. He steps in with the appropriate preparation and giftedness to accomplish the tasks.

Montclair is one of those five star corps moving in the right direction with a new leader such as the CSM. This may go under the category of "if you want to get the job done, give it to some one who is very busy. They'll always get it done."

Thanks, CSM. The corps is fortunate to have you.

We enjoyed being a part of the Empire State Divisional Soldiers' Rally and tribute to their divisional leaders on the occasion of their retirement. Everything was perfect. We weren't surprised when all that was said brought glory to God. You can't speak about the Woods without honoring God.

Each of their three sons gave remarks about their parents. They were terrific. Commissioners Moretz were present as well with Commissioner Lawrence Moretz giving an inspiring message. Many of us stood in re-commitment to ministry in God's name.

They're staying on until the end of June to help TSA. Who's surprised? God bless the Woods.

Stewardship

Stewardship is, of course, more than tithing. It is also more than simply finances. We should understand it as the Godly use of His resources.

I am compelled tonight to think about financial stewardship and Salvationism. The Orders and Regulations for soldiers has always had a firm stance on stewardship and the concerns of indebtedness. Early on, the regulations permitted the dismissal of a soldier for indebtedness. Stealing, or misusing SA funds would have been a reason for immediate dismissal.

I'm glad that we are not on a stewardship campaign to release our people for their poor financial choices or even a defendable circumstance of weak finances. I do believe that we need to do our best to reflect the holiness of God in these important areas of our lives. I'm glad blogging is free.

Congo Brazzaville - Final

Praise God for His faithfulness!

Our prayers have been answered in abundance and God is glorified. Words aren't going to convey the fullness of my heart over the presence of God in these days. Bill and I are dazzled by the proof of His interest in the Congo Brazzaville Territory. We salute Commissioners Mfon and Ime Akpan for their holy leadership of this vineyard. They are exceptional and I am honored to call them friends.

The night at the SFOT was inspiring. All of the cadets came to the mercy seat to refresh their committments to the Lord. The area-wide holiness meeting was standing room only in a 3,000 seat hall. It's their version of the CMT, only twice the size. The meeting was glorious with many groups participating. The altar call resembled the flow of tributaries in the aisles to the river of the water of life at the mercy seat. Hallelujah!

The final program featured many music groups including their territorial band, songsters and timbrels. Their proficiency was superb and their spirit infectous. Bill gave an inspiring word on the value of music in TSA. He has been the perfect guest here. The people love him and respect him...just like at home.

The glory belongs to God. Our meager offerings were given in His name. He multiplied our loaves and fish...again.

Congo Brazzaville - Part Quatre

There have been showers of blessings...this is the promise of God.

Bill and I have just come from the Soldiers' Rally which was beautifully filled...with the presence of God. Bill's music is annointed and wonderfully in synch with the people. Today he sang, "These are the days of Elijah..." The whole place was rockin'.

Yesterday at the officers' councils we knelt with over 200 souls. Today it was more than twice that. We weren't counting heads...we were consumed with the presence of the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah! I will be an officer for thirty years in June, but have rarely seen what we are witnessing here. Glory to God!

Tonight we're at the SFOT and tomorrow morning we're in for the largest of the meetings...a united holiness meeting. Please continue with us for the largest outpouring of the Spirit. We plan to give Him our largest praise!

Congo Brazzaville - Part Trois

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Bill and I worshipped in two Officers Councils today. He's cool...doesn't seem affected by the 95° heat and maximum humidity. His songs are an inspiration as is his personal witness.

The Holy Spirit turned up the fire. There were 205 in attendance...some, taking more than a day's journey to be there. Their white uniforms were impeccable as is their spirit. There came 205 to the mercy seat...that, of course, included me. Hallelujah!

God has had His way...and we are better for Him. Let me state that clearly. We are all for Him. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit in your heart right now and join us in His name.

Tomorrow, we are expecting about 3,000 for the Soldiers' Rally followed by a meeting at the SFOT with the cadets. God is maximizing your prayer.

Congo Brazzaville - Part Deux

Praise the Lord! The journey was worth it and we're already seeing the hand of God at work. Upon our evening arrival, we were met by 150 soldiers and officers in full white uniforms, singing and praising God. You can imagine that we were overwhelmed and grateful to God for this warm welcome.

Today we journeyed to four different institutions to witness the work of God in the midst of minimal resources and maximum faith. Our first stop was to a medical clinic where hundreds are treated each day. Captain Nkounkou's brother works there and was thrilled to receive the microscopes that Celestin sent with us. Can someone get to Celestin to let him know?

The second stop was a blind school where miracles are taking place. It is the only one of it's kind in the country. The third stop was to a sewing and micro credit school. Training and a concrete future. The founder would be proud.

Last stop was to a school operated by the local corps. It is quite ambitious, but is meeting the academic needs of about 350 students.

At each location, we presented a gospel challenge in the certainty that His word never returns void. Thank you for your prayers. Tomorrow we are in Officers' Councils.

Congo Brazzaville

Tomorrow, with B/m Bill Rollins, I travel to Brazzaville Congo for special spiritual meetings. First we meet with the officers in Officers Councils. Then we participate in a large soldiers' rally followed by meetings with the cadets. On Sunday we will be in the Area-wide Holiness Meeting. They're expecting about 3,000 people.

Please pray for us and the people who gather with us in the Congo. There are language and cultural differences which have to be surmounted. We're trusting God to speak personally to His people and believing for their responsiveness to the Holy Spirit.

General Bramwell Tillsley

Your Training Principal becomes a lasting influence in your life. Our Principal was General Bramwell Tillsley. From the first day we met him and his wife, we were convinced that God had set up this relationship for the glory of God. I had never heard such dynamic preaching (never listened much before that moment) and was inspired by their personal interest in people.

They were visiting at Spring Valley Corps this morning. They always inspire me towards holiness. Every conversation and every opportunity to be near them is a joy to my heart.

Isn't it amazing that our son Jason and his wife join two sessions of cadets at the SFOT with Major Mark Tillsley as the Training Principal. It is as they say when we think of the Tillsleys, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Hallelujah!

Retirement Salute

Last night at the Centennial Memorial Temple, Salvationists and friends gathered for a retirement salute to both General and Commissioner Larsson and Commissioners Todd and Carol Bassett. The Temple was packed and the crowd very responsive as we considered the faithfulness of God over the life and ministry of these four terrific people.

Seekers knelt at the mercy seat for grace and the Christ-centered worship was lifted to heaven to the glory of God. We were inspired to be there. The Larssons retired on April first and the Bassetts will retire at the end of this month.

I salute them each here and go on record as being grateful to God for each of them. Their influence on my life and that of the global Salvation Army is significant. Praise the Lord!

Rev. William Sloan Coffin

As we say, Reverend William Sloan Coffin was promoted to glory on April 13, 2006. He was 81 years old at the time and his funeral was today at the Riverside Church in Manhattan. I've never met him personally, but have, through his books. He came from the left side politically and was known as a pacifist, particularly during the Viet Nam war.

Theologically, we come from different perspectives, but on the important things, we had a lot in common. I valued his forthrightness on his positions and believe he was well rooted in the love of God. Now he knows more than all of us put together. In the presence of Christ, he sees clearly and embraces all God is.

As I tried to suggest in yesterday's blog, this is my overdue thank you to this man of God.

I saw a letter today sent to one of my friends who heard from someone he prayed with at Old Orchard Beach Camp Meetings. It was a wonderful letter describing the seeker's hopes at going to the Mercy Seat and finding grace for his needs. He also found a counselor to speak and pray with.

So the gist of the letter was just to say thanks, even after all this time. The Spirit of God has been working in his heart and given him another counselor near home and he's doing great. Praise the Lord!

Often I'm convicted about not saying thanks enough. I'm Ok day to day for regular things, but I think I should start to thank authors of books and published articles that reach my soul or challenge my thinking. I'm sure there are other areas in which I could be more grateful too. Thanks for reading this.

Easter Monday

Today, our office was closed as an Easter holiday. I'm really grateful for this consideration. I know that many SA offices and centers were not closed and actually, I'm grateful for that too. Ministry continues through the nights, days and weeks of the year, regardless of the calendar.

So I am calling today Easter Monday. There's something wrong with our theology if Easter is complete on Easter Sunday. This is why St. Augustine spoke of us as "Easter People." He was right. Allow the overwhelming miracle of Easter to permeate and flood every day of your life. This is God's plan. Hallelujah!

Silent Saturday

I've never heard a label for the Saturday between Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. If I were naming it, I'd call it Silent Saturday. No news. The disciples were wading in uncertainty, when in their lifetime they witnessed walking on water. They must have been very confused.

For us who know the rest of the story, we just know it to be a day to await the Risen Lord. You know, get ready for Easter. The day was much more than that. According to the Scriptures, Jesus confronted satan in hell, just before His earthly resurrection. That's big.

The significance of the Last Supper is something that we will contemplate until we see Jesus face to face. Which part of it intrigues you? Communion? Betrayal? The foot washing? The words of Jesus? The responses of the disciples? The promise of the Holy Spirit?

It all comes together under the love of God. No less. It was a necessary night before the atonement and resurrection. I'm glad...and intrigued. Each word is significant and each action. Beautiful.

May your understanding of that night become a better understanding of the love of God for you.

Holy Week

This is such a special time of the year. The week is labeled as Holy Week, and some make it so by the way the week is set apart unto God. The Scriptural account of the events of Holy Week are full with evidence of the love of God for His children.

Aren't you glad it has lasted more than a week and that God doesn't even measure His grace in that framework? I am. His holy abundance is meted out towards us in an unlimited and unconditional way. It's too trite to say that every week should be a holy week, since the occurrences of this week are so spectacular. Each day of each week can be holy.

Over the weekend at the Ladore Lodge Conference Center, high school students came together by invitation to learn of the Holy Spirit. With the Munns, Antils, and the Territorial Youth Department, the kids were given a first rate opportunity. This is so right.

Can it get any better? Carolyn and I spent Palm Sunday at the Dayton Central Corps, filled to the rafters with people and filled to the soul with the Holy Spirit. Music by Roz, Kip and team was extraordinary and the ARC choir was on duty thanks to Captains Dolder. They really contribute to the whole-family-everyone-is-included atmosphere that permeates the corps.

Majors Tom and Barbara Duperree are perfectly suited to the corps and loved by all. The whole experience was delightful to the soul. God is having His way with this corps. It gets a five star rating. The only reason it only gets a five star rating is because there's no higher rating n my chart. Drive to Dayton for a Sunday. Go out of your way to be there, but get there early if you want a seat. (Where was Reggie Winters anyway?)

Chief Of The Staff

The Second in command of the world-wide Salvation Army is now Commissioner Robin Dunster. She is Australian and comes to International Headquarters from the Philippines as the Territorial Commander. She is, in fact, the first woman to hold the position in the history of the office.

Like her predecessors, she is an amazing officer with sterling credentials and experience as a Salvationist leader. Being the first appointment made by the new General, we should expect something very special from her in this critical role. They will forge into a missional, effective team that will lead our beloved Army into the uncertain future with a certainty resultant from a close relationship with God and reality. Hallelujah!

General Booth didn't quite imagine the incredible, dynamic energy and direction of God's Army that each successive General has brought to the altar. It's the stamp of the Master on your heart that will grant access to glory. It's the color of His precious blood shed on Calvary. This is your eternal identity and it should be current. This new residence building is beautiful and state of the art. It is for cadet families and officer staff at the School For Officer Training. First, we're grateful to God that we need the housing and secondly, we're grateful to God for the resources to do it.

It's named after one of our greathearts, Colonel Milton S. Agnew, former SFOT principal and superior holiness teacher. His books are still coveted by Salvationists, although mostly out of print. You may want to check with our trade department to see what they have.

The building dedication will take place over commissioning weekend. It's an important improvement and a signal to the commitment of the territory to the SFOT.

Our Michael, that is Sgt. Michael A. Honsberger arrived home Saturday from his home base in Italy. He had served in both Iraq and Afghanistan and returned to Italy only recently. Upon his arrival at the airport, he proposed to Katie Maxwell, who accepted the proposal and promptly put on the engagement ring. Looks like the wedding will be on June 17th. Hallelujah!

We're so glad he's home safe and now, his life is filling with love for a beautiful woman, who's also a Salvationist. We've all known Katie for quite a while and couldn't be happier for both of them. There's part of me that wants to say his infantry training will come in handy in the marriage, but I won't say it. God bless them!

So it's the annual command review season. This one in Cincinnati is the last one Carolyn and I will do in this territory. I'm getting a little nostalgic.

The division is led by Majors Kenneth and Cheryl Maynor. They've been doing it well here for a few years now. This command is a warm Bible-belt experience, where family values are still important and where hard work is normal. They still have their challenges, but they also have a culture where morality is expected.

The Maynors would be quick to credit both their divisional team and the field operations team that is doing the frontline ministries and they'd be right. It takes many dedicated people to do what they're doing around here with dynamic integrity. Thank you, each!

The Averys retired last Saturday at Star Lake Lodge and Conference Center. It was just beautiful. As they went through the different phases of their life with photos and comments from friends, they both said, "that was a wonderful appointment. We loved being there."

They figured out the secret to living: being content with your life and enjoying it. They've been serving the Lord with joy and won't let retirement stop them. God has honored their faithfulness with His blessing. I can only hope to finish my officership so well.

The joys of corps life are no where more evident than in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Area Coordinators and Citadel corps officers are Majors Tim and Willie Mae Lyle and the Temple corps officers are Captains Greg and Alma Durrand.

We started the day with a Men's Prayer breakfast. None other than Major Carl Schoch and Roger Duperree were the kitchen crew. Over 60 men were present for the blessing. Great mix of culture, generation and spiritual maturity.

We then attended the Adult Sunday School class, taught by Major Charles Drummond. He's as good as it gets, and the chapel had a good number in it for the lesson.

The Holiness meeting included over 200 and was a blessing from the flute solo by the junior soldier to the band and songsters. There's a lot going on here, and, you're not surprised, I see the corps as a five star corps. People have been moving to the community to enjoy the corps fellowship.

Mo' Cadets' Campaign

We have been hearing wonderful results in the Cadets' Campaigns. God is having His way. I am so grateful to Him.

Where's Project 1:17 this week? There must be something to report.

The first Cadets' Campaign I remember was when the likes of Cadet Bunny Olsen came with a married women's brigade to the Niagara Falls Citadel Corps. They were great. The next brigade sported Cadet Bill LaMarr and a men's brigade with Cadet Noel Christian. Was Captain Tom Mack the brigade officer? These men made an impact on my young heart. They thoroughly convinced me of their sincerity and calling. They also seemed to be having a good time.

Majors Jim and Molly Shotzberger Retire

In an official, and yet sometimes informal ceremony at THQ on Friday, the Shotzbergers retired as USA Eastern Territory officers in The Salvation Army. Both from Lewistown, Pennsylvania and serving over 40 years, their service was acknowledged and they were given their retirement certificates by none other than Commissioner Lawrence R. Moretz, Territorial Commander.

In their final appointments, Jim is the Supplies & Purchasing Secretary and Molly is the Volunteer and Chaplaincy Training Director for Emergency Disaster Services in the Community Relations and Development department. Both are significant roles and both served with exemplary distinction. Their entire officership has been marked by self-less service and obedience to the Lord. They are my good friends. We will miss them.

There's great concern over Myspace expressed through the media that it is a notable field for child predators to surf and attract unsuspecting kids toward serious trouble. This is really true about Blogspot and Xanga as well, I'm sure.

How is it that we can convey convincingly of the dangers of such internet activity and protect our kids and friends?

It's also curious to note how some kids will post or comment just about anything from intimate dialogue to photos, as if they were doing so from the safety of their room or computer keyboard.

There's incredible potential in these types of communication...incredible good...incredible bad...Let's be about the redemption of anything and everything that needs to be redeemed.

Bill Thrall, of Leadership Catalyst, met with us in the M&M III Forum. I've read the book a few years ago, sat in this seminar before, and still value what I learned this week. The reality of leadership is influence, and the reality of influence is trust...Get it? No trust...no influence...not leadership.

Of course, this is a much modified and simplistic conclusion of a very involved and interesting presentation. He spoke to us without the need for SA translation or interpretation. Everyone in any SA role benefited. Where don't we want to facilitate trust?

Mission and Ministry Forum III

Everything is coming along beautifully, with the Territorial Arts Ministry Team presenting "Marching Along." The mix of the presentations is a good blending of the subject matter and the worship time has been exceptional.

Be A Hero

Allison commented on Friday about the Be A Hero Fund Raiser. I didn't get there, but I hope she'll update us on how it went.

Last August at Tam Conservatory, a commitment was made by the students to raise significant funds for the Hero Fund.

The Hero Fund was established to raise money to assist in the Salvation Army's relief efforts in the country of Nigeria, specifically, the work done to help the many orphaned children of that country.

As a group, a goal of $10,000 dollars to be raised by December 1 st, 2005 was decided upon. Additionally, the 75 students and their leaders agreed to work towards the ultimate goal of $50,000 dollars by the commencement of TAM Conservatory 2006.

Good Books

While taking a box of books over to the SFOT today, it occurred to me that I was saying good bye to some good friends. I know these texts are inanimate, but in a curious way I have developed an appreciation for them. As I read, I mark the margins and sometimes speak out loud to the pages. They speak to me...and sometimes I speak to them...in a friendly sort of way.

I recall when I bought them and where. I remember in some cases where I was when I read the book in not only a geographic way. These are for the most part, good memories, not to mention the actual value the books have had on my life and ministry.

Women's Ministry Meetings

Carolyn is in Syracuse for a couple of days in ministry with the women of the Empire State Division. Her preparation was exhaustive and she's ready in heart. I think the ladies will be blessed in abundance through the moving of the Holy Spirit.

Our women are the majority in the territory. They have held our 'Army' together since the beginning and continue to do so with grace to the fullest. The IHQ webmaster has put out a request to identify regularly broadcasted Vlogs, podcasts and other sound byte type postings related to TSA. Evidently there's an interest in compiling these to be referenced on other official sites.

This is a good move. The liquid church is flowing and spreading out like a stream moving towards an ocean. These electronic, interesting bits are giving the gospel a new venue to reach the unsaved, unchurched, undernourished and those who simply want to understand the truth as God has declared it.

Territorial Vocal Convocation

History in the making...the first ever USA Eastern Territory Vocal Convocation took place this weekend at beautiful Camp Ladore in the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division. Captain Len Ballentine was the guest and Territorial Music Secretary Ron Waiksnoris collaborated to design and deliver what is being reported as a great success.

Vocal musicians from all over the territory enjoyed a comprehensive learning experience and some corps songster brigades performed. The Territorial Staff Songsters were on duty as well. Singing is a great way to minister and worship. A good brigade will reach the souls of people of all walks and often the words and music stay with the hearer to the delight of God.

Getting Ready

A good discipline for all of us is to get ready for Sunday worship. For many years, before I was committed fully to Christ, Saturday night was party night. I stayed up as long as I could, never mind what I was doing, and got to the corps at the last minute to take my place, usually in the band.

I enjoy Sundays so much better now that I see the benefit of approaching the day with less distraction and more rest. I look forward to being there. I anticipate the presence of God, seen undeniably in the faces and hearts of my friends and associates. I'm usually surprised by the blessing of the verses to an unexpected song, the voice of a prayer or a testimony scheduled or not.

You've seen initials like this before. These represent Southern New England Division Annual Command Review. We conducted this today as the snow fell across New England. Majors Bill and Lorraine Bamford are the capable divisional leaders who give God all the glory for the ministry that is taking place. He is at work here.

The whole team, including corps officers, local officers, etc,...is fully engaged and serving God in maximum ways. The outcomes are revealing the increasing glory of God. Ash Wednesday

This has been a beautiful, holy day. As you know this day is the beginning of the Lenten Season and is 40 days (not including Sundays) before Easter. The ashes from the Palm leaves from Palm Sunday are used to signify repentance before God and are marked on the forehead of the believer in the shape of a cross. While not commonly done at TSA, there are a few places that will do so. I've never had the experience personally, but imagine that it must be significant to those who have.

Another part of our day was marked by the World Day of Prayer celebration at THQ. Prayer Ambassador, Major Janet Munn led us in prayer for the work of God in TSA in South Africa. South African Sharon Bussey gave us images and descriptions of the need of prayer for South Africa. The prayer stations were helpful while we petitioned the Lord for His grace.

I have hope that your day was impressed with God's abundant grace as well.

More Candidates for Officership

With the Candidates Council having met this week, four more candidates were accepted for training to enter this fall. The process affirms every level of ministry in corps and the ARC. The application reveals how the candidate was saved, sanctified and called. It's loaded with references to faithful local officers, parents, DYS's and corps officers. Often there is also reference to a special event where the candidate believes that God spoke and called the person, personally.

When you put the case altogether, it is clear how God designed their life to know Him and serve Him in this extraordinary way. Everything comes together, the candidate responds to God's powerful love and the Holy Spirit guides the life for maximum ministry. Praise God!

Lt. Colonel Norman Bearcroft

Not an obituary.

Rather...a birthday celebration. Tonight, a few of Lt. Colonel Bearcroft's good NY friends assembled to give a surprise 80th birthday party. He's an amazing man of God who has served faithfully in musical and other dynamic ways to worship God and assist others to do so as well.

From an early day, I remember his music reaching my soul and leading me to greater confidence in the presence of God. I am not alone in this reality. Thousands around the world share this appreciation as many will until the return of the Lord Himself. Bearcroft's music will greatly outlast this generation and will always be valued for its spiritual relevance. I'm grateful to God for this man and that for a time such as this, he's in the neighborhood.

TV Commercials

Some TV Commercials, I just don't get. Some are plenty funny and others annoying. I found myself during the Superbowl, anxiously awaiting the commercials.

Before we are too hard on the capitalistic ways of our beloved country, recognize that these commercials are simply giving us what we desire. They are a (poor) reflection of our interests and desires. If you want to study our culture, you don't have to go any further than your television...or magazine...or billboard. In most cases it's an ugly picture, although not always.

I think you know where I'm going. How well are we reflecting the grace of God? If an advertisement were designed specifically for you, what would it be like? What nature of yours would it appeal to?

Christian Music

In addition to my addiction to brass band music, I have a love for jazz...particularly Christian jazz. Have you ever heard of Ben Tankard? Great keyboard man...beautiful music.

Most days at the office, I'll have some of this music on for inspiration. I think I have all of the CD's he's recorded. There are a few others too that speak to me, but I shy from making this blog a commercial.

Often, when I pray I have music playing, sometimes the music informs my prayer and that which might have been a little stale becomes alive and well. Loved ones...listen to the music of God. He will fill your soul.
