Strategic Planning

It sounds so good and it is generally a good idea. I think strategic thinking might, however, have the edge. Sure, we need a strategic plan, but when the plan is realized, it's the strategic thinking that will carry you forward.

Clearly, floating along won't get you where you need to go and just following others doesn't work unless they're going where you want to go. Here's where Lucy and Charlie Brown step in:

Luck asks Charlie,"On the great cruise ship of life C.B., do you put your deck chair in the front to catch a vision of what to expect or do you place your chair in the back to enjoy where you've come from?" Charlie Brown responds, "Actually, Lucy, I can't even get my deck chair unfolded."

Charlie Brown most often helps us with reality. How's your strategic plan coming?...

Psalms 20:4 (NIV)
Ps 20:4 "May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed."

most days it seems as if my deck chair won't open! I want a seat where I can see where we've been and where we are going!

In the process of planning, working with the deck chair analogy, listening to the voices of the people sitting on various places on the deck might be best. In fact, even those who cannot get their chairs open have a voice, if not an investment in the sounding process. Those who are members of the community of memory, those who are invested in what has made an organization great might be sitting in the stern (piloting the vessel as well!). Those in the community of innovation may be those on the foredeck, feeling the breezes as they whip through the hair, looking intently for changes on the horizon. Interestingly, most of our partners are not sailing first class, or economy class, but are in steerage, living in the ship's hold. They have never been able to even walk on the deck, and often do not have a voice. Just a couple of not-so-random thoughts, Chief!

I'm glad you're back stateside, safe and sound!
